In 1851 the army began re-equipping with long range, accurate rifles, as opposed to the standard musket. And since shooting was fast becoming more of an art form, based on skill and expertise, instead of drilling and speed or reload. In 1854 the School of Musketry was founded to study these new techniques; this was a name it bore until 1919 when it was changed to the Small Arms School.

In 1929 the present badge was introduced, comprising of crossed rifles and a Vickers machine gun, surmounted by a crown and surrounded by a laurel wreath. The title Small Arms School Corps came into being at this time. This badge has an aged look, and is designed to be pinned to a beret, but does not come with an attachment pin.
