The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was instituted in 1917 by King George V, and later redesigned by King George VI in 1936.
This is the 2nd type Knight Commander awarded from 1936 and is still awarded today. This award is a silver-coloured star inlaid with light blue enamel, surmounted above by the King's Crown, and a central medallion on the cross that is surrounded by the Order's motto 'For God and the Empire' surrounded by a scarlet enamel. The centre of the star depicts the busts of King George V and Queen Mary.
This replica is of the Knight Commander class, the Second highest of the order.
