The War Merit Cross with Swords was instituted on the 11th October, 1939, and was awarded for civilian or military merit which did not involve combat service on the front line. This is the 1st Class version without swords, with the swords added for bravery or exposure to physical danger. This is the screwback version of the award, which also features the maker's mark on the reverse.
These crosses have a smart silvered finish and screwback fixing.
