The Most Excellent Order of the British Empire was instituted in 1917 by King George V.
This is the 1st type CBE awarded from 1917 and was awarded until 1936. This award is a gold-coloured cross patonce inlaid with light blue enamel, surmounted above by the King's Crown, and a central medallion on the cross that is surrounded by the Order's motto 'For God and the Empire' surrounded by a scarlet enamel. The centre of the cross depicts Britannia.
This replica is of the Commander class, the third highest of the order, and is complete with a purple neck ribbon (denoting the civilian division of the award) and a card with instructions on the wearing of the insignia. The award comes with a fetching leatherette case stamped in gold with 'C.B.E'.
