Royal Leicestershire Regiment Cap Badge
Product Details
The Regiment was first formed in 1688 during the last days of King James II’s reign, pledging allegiance to William III after the Glorious Revolution. It was designated as the 17th regiment of Foot. They served during the Spanish Wars of Succession, and in the American Revolution, expertly extricating themselves at the Battle of Princeton where they were surrounded and outnumbered by General Washington's forces. It wasn't until 1782 when the regiment was associated with Leicestershire (as became standard for regiment without a Royal title) to boost recruitment in the county. They served in India for 18 years as part of the East India Company, after which the 'Royal Tiger' badge was awarded to the regiment. In 1881 they were renamed The Leicestershire Regiment, and after WW2 received the 'Royal' designation. In 1964 they joined four other regiments to become the Royal Anglian regiment.
Notable conflicts include the Afghan wars, the Crimean War, and both World Wars.
This fine reproduction of the regiment badge features a gilt tiger, with two silver banners inscribed 'Leicestershire' (below) and 'Hindoostan' (above). It has an aged look, and is designed to be pinned to a beret, but does not come with an attachment pin.
